Case study: CDC Group

CDC Group, now British International Investment, invests up to £2 billion every year in green infrastructure, technology and other sectors. The organisation has been growing rapidly – and so has its workload. Obelisk helped to build a flexible, mixed-ability team that could support the expanding legal team in periods of high demand and allow them to focus on the organisation’s core role of investment support.

Flexible Paralegal Jobs FAQs

What sort of paralegal jobs are available?

We offer outstanding access to interesting projects with dynamic legal teams, primarily in-house at large global corporations and growing businesses across multiple industries, from financial services, banking and retail, to e-commerce, telecoms, and media. Our clients typically engage our paralegals to support an in-house legal team with: reviewing, amending and drafting documents and contracts; regulatory investigations; compliance tasks including data protection matters; legal research and triaging legal workflow to name a few examples.

How do you match paralegals to clients?

Our Client Services Team connects you with work that corresponds to your professional profile and our one-on-one support helps you develop further in areas of work that interest you. You can also join our LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/13012240/

How do I get paid as a freelance paralegal?

Our hourly/daily rates vary according to the role and client, and these will be discussed individually with you. Depending on the off-payroll status of the role (IR35) and your own working arrangements, it’s likely you’ll be required to contract with us via an umbrella company. You are welcome to work with your choice of umbrella, as long as they are FCSA-accredited. You will be required to complete weekly timesheets as you work.

Do I get ongoing training as a paralegal?

Our Client Services team are on hand to provide advice around every opportunity and how we think it will add to your CV and help build your legal career.

How much experience do I need before I can apply?

You will need at least 12 months of previous commercial legal experience (in-house or private practice) and have completed the LPC or be underway with the SQE exams. We are looking for people who are responsible and reliable, can demonstrate a can-do attitude and have a desire to learn. You must be available to start a role either immediately or within a few weeks.

Will becoming a legal consultant help me in my training contract applications and applying for other paralegal roles?

Good quality experience can help you can a training contract as it would give you more things to think about in interviews to secure a role. Some of our paralegals secured training contracts in the organisations they were placed in by Obelisk Support and, when this happens, we are extremely proud.

Do you offer the SQE (Solicitor's Qualifying Exam) pathway for paralegals?

Yes - we offer our freelance paralegals a choice of routes to qualifying as a lawyer. The SQE (Solicitor's Qualifying Exam) is a good pathway to becoming a solicitor, and the increase interest from legal teams in supporting new entrants to the profession.

How does insurance work?

Obelisk believes that the alternative legal services that we provide should offer the same peace of mind as a law firm, and so we hold comprehensive solicitors’ professional indemnity insurance to protect our clients. All of our legal professionals who do not hold their own policies are covered by this insurance. Full details of our insurance can be provided upon request.

Do you pay the living wage?

Yes. All of our lawyers and paralegals earn more than the National Living Wage, the Real Living Wage and the London Living Wage.

What is Obelisk Support looking for when applying as a freelance paralegal?

Whether you are wanting to work as a paralegal, are an experienced paralegal or you are an aspiring solicitor wanting to gain experience as a paralegal while seeking a training contract, we would love to hear from you. Ideally you will have a degree in Law or a related subject and at least six months of relevant work experience as a paralegal, in a commercial environment or from working on legal projects. Most importantly, you’ll have a “can-do” attitude, strong general IT skills (familiar with spreadsheets, preparing documents, scheduling meetings) and a high level of attention to detail.
